| Description: |
Mukui is a wet mill affiliated to Ruthaka Farmers Coop Society which has seven wet mills namely Ruarai, Kamuchuni, Nduma, Muthuthini, Mukui, Kibutio and Karaba. The society is in a three year coffee quality and quantity improvement project with SMS and Hivos. Ruthaka FCS belonged to the Mukurwe-ini giant society which had 28 wet mills but after a split members decided to form a seven wet mills society. The cooperative is located in the old Mukurwe-ini Division, Nyeri District.
Coming from an altitude of around 1400-1550 masl this is not the highest grown Kenyan. A mixture of varietals SL28, SL34 and some Ruiru 11, combined with the rich volcanic local soils produces a truly amazing cup.
In the cup expect a creamy body, mixed with a liquorice and aniseed balls that just hangs on and on. Because of its smooth body this one lingers on the palate for an age. It's a strange one but this coffee really makes me think about Kenyans in a different way (in fact we had this with all four Kenyans this year). When cupping them we all thought about colours to describe them, and If it were a colour it would be deep rich red and jet black. I know, I know, but try it and I am sure you will agree.
