Juan José Ernesto Menéndez Argüello, or as he likes to be called 'Neto', has become one of our most special friends at origin. Ernesto, more than anyone else, has gone above and beyond the call of duty to find us the most wonderful coffees he can; from Finca Alaska, to Finca La Ilusion, to the wonderful Cascara we have all been enjoying.

We have been sitting on this as a special treat for a while now. A tiny 80kg lot, this is the natural processed lot from the now very famous la Ilusion. This is the coffee that was used by this year's World barista champion for his cappucino set.

In the cup there is the biggest hit of spicy liquorice I have ever tasted, but there is also an underlying sweetness. So, think in terms of those liquorice pipes with the sugar 100s and 1000s on them and you're in the right place. This coffee is complex, deep, interesting, and super rare.

This is a must try: it's a must have. I encourage you to dive in and try it while it's here, if for nothing else than to experience the amazing variety of coffees this great man can grow.

  1. Yes unique maybe rare but not a pleasant flavour!

Posted by Ambrose Greenfield on 23rd Apr 2012

The description is true in that it is a complex coffee but the aroma and flavour is not pleasant. I’ve got through 500 grams and am very glad to see the last of it. Tried it as espresso, latte, cap, Americano, filter, French press, black/white. My wife, my Dad, my friends and family tried it and everyone agreed they didn’t enjoy the flavour. I couldn’t even give this stuff away! Be warned this coffee is not for everyone and is not a MUST try and was a WASTEFUL buy!!! No takers at my end for this stuff…but maybe you should make you're own mind up?

  2. I am awe of this coffee

I cannot describe in words the complexity and deliciousness of this rare coffee....

I pulled a shot, using previous grind setting, expecting a sink shot, it took 45 seconds and got me 23g from 15g dose, however it was the closest I have had to a ''God shot'' from my machine.

I urge anyone who loves coffee to try this.

  3. Wow, beautiful cup

Pushed it through the aeropress for the most interesting cup I have had for a long time.

The spicy sweetness, with no natural funk to upset things. I love this coffee.
