PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT COFFEE BUT A COFFEE CHERRY INFUSION BREW

From the famous award winning farm La Ilusion we are very proud to offer Cascara. Cascara is the dried fruit from the coffee 'cherry', the seed from which is the coffee 'bean' as we know it. Normally this is a waste product or at best is used to fertilise the ground by breaking it down. But it can be used to brew a delicious and refreshing caffeinated drink.

We have been searching for Cascara ever since we were first introduced it by some good friends a couple of years ago, and Ernesto was one of the first people we contacted to see if it would be possible. With Neto everything is possible.

So what do you need to brew it ?

A tea Pot or a French press or even a Chemex

Some scales (everyone really should have bought some by now)

Some Cascara

A kettle with water

A cup

Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Boil the kettle and let the temperature drop to 90oc

Step 2: Weigh out the Cascara, you will need a ratio of 24g of Cascara per litre of water

Step 3: Add the water

Step 4: Wait for 4 minutes

Step 5: Heat the cup or mug that you would like to use

Step 6: Pour and enjoy

Cascara is high in caffeine and if consumed in large amounts will give you a buzz, so you have been warned.

In the cup this is one of my favourite flavours, it is just like eating coffee cherries straight from the tree. On the front you get that floral astringency, hitting fruit sweetness in a battle of tastes with the bitterness of the dried fruit. Then you get a rush of rose petals and jasmine flavour that's covered in an orange like stickiness. A unique cup that I think makes a great palate cleanser and a great refreshing drink to perk you up. An all round delicious coffee alternative.

  1. The best cascara in a long time

The best cascara in a long time;) Incredibly good tea!! Now I know what I should have in my bottle while running marathon - cascara and sugar

  2. Wahey!

Posted by Stan Watt on 3rd Dec 2010

My cascara arrived not long ago so I immediately set about making a brew. Not long after my first mug the caffeine kicked in - WOW! I think I may need something to slow the heart a tad! Typed this in 3 seconds flat... :)

  3. Strange but lovely

Can not get enough, more more more

  4. A great opportunity to try something a bit different - tasty too!

Being a lover of all things coffee, I couldn't resist the temptation to give this a go when I heard about it appearing on the shop.

Brewed 500ml up using the recommended 24g per litre method described, and eneded up with a really nice infusion, some nice jasmine and floral notes, but a really nice heavy dried fruit flavour underpinning it all (reminded me of Christmas!). As others have commented, flavour definitely improves as it cools.

If you want a caffeine fix alternative to coffee or tea, this is definitely worth a try.

  5. Nice, occasionally

Posted by Paul Eagles on 15th Sep 2010

I'd heard about cascara before but never been able to try it so had to try some when Steve said he had some for sale.

In the bag it smells very heavily of dried fruits no surprise really as in Bolivia this stuff is called 'Sultana'

As the previous reviewer said the flavour improves as it cools. Fresh out of the tea pot it doesn't smell overly pleasant but after a short while you get the dried fruit coming through.

There is a big caffeine hit with this stuff so for me it's an occasional drink.

  6. Bittersweet, tasty, floral, delicious

Thank you Steve, for bringing cascara to us and making it possible for me to try it!

An interesting brew - after 5 minutes in the french press, the aroma was unremarkable - like a plain green tea. (May have the start of a cold, though). But the taste is far more interesting!

Bittersweet - caffeine and honey flavours competing. Up front, it's like a jasmine green tea, but also with some methi/fenugreek notes (like a good curry). Honestly - i was thinking fenugreek, and my partner said "like curry"!

I may have brewed it a bit hot - and i'm finding the flavour improves as it cools, mellowing and rounding out with a warming fruitiness.

I give it 4 stars just because it's my first cascara, and i don't yet know how good they can be. There could be a 5 star around the corner! But i would give 4.5 if I could. Really great coffee tea.
