San Julian is a beautiful coffee farm located in Palencia, 40 km from Guatemala City. It’s a small coffee farm in size, but big in terms of quality. The farm produces 250 bags per year, the objective was to start on a small scale to control quality.

Although the owners are the fourth generation from the wet mill and dry mill machinery manufacturing brand Ruttimann, they have built and sold coffee processing machinery for the last 100 years, but they have only grown coffee for the past 10 years. They started a business selling high quality produced, roasted and packaged coffee in Guatemala City, a market they thought was not exploited, but they could not find coffee of good enough quality because most of it got exported.

The owners come from a family of Swiss Mechanical Engineers who migrated to Guatemala after World War I. They established Taller Ruttimann in 1908, one of the first machine shops to ever assist coffee growers with wet mills needs in Guatemala. Their knowledge is being invested on the continuous improvement of their wet mill, whilst doing their best to transcend their European values directly into the coffee bean.

Today, 70% of the coffee produce in San Julian is roasted, packaged and sold in Guatemala City as 'Hogos Coffee', with 20% sold as green coffee to 'high end' local roasters and 10% exported to the USA.

The family also run a coffee shop, opened five years ago, located close to the Congress Building in Guatemala City. Every now and then you can spot a couple of congressmen lobbying whilst they drink coffee from the shop.

The vison at the farm is honesty to the coffee tree, honesty to the workers, and honesty to the country.

In the cup expect spicey bold coffee, rich mouthfeel with a malty mid-body, finishing with a very subdued but pleaseing winey acidity and a hint of ginger.

  1. Cup of excellence?

Posted by AM on 7th Apr 2010

I'm suprised this is deemed to be a cup of excellence, ironically I found it it to be my least favourite of the Guatemelan coffees on offer, verging on the bland. If you want a good Guatemalan coffee I suggest you go for either the El Pollo or Michicoy Microlots.
