The Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder has a great reputation as the choice espresso grinder of home users, just as its sister product the Rancilio Silvia, enjoys similar fame in the home espresso machine category. At Has Bean, we stock things that we like and use. This is one of the machines that we really like. The biggest accolade I can give this grinder is that we used one in a commercial environment for a long time when we had our coffee shop and it never missed a beat. This is a great grinder at an equally great price.

Grinder burrs diameter: 50mm.
Bean hopper capacity: 300g.

  1. Good mid-range grinder, but it 'clumps' the coffee

Posted by John Devlin on 14th Nov 2011

Having owned the doserless model for 2 years, I noticed a good improvement over my previous, cheaper, grinder.
Plus, the design of the rocky really is very aesthetically pleasing.

However, I increasingly became aware of, and frustrated by the 'clumping' nature of this grinder; on occasion, it almost looked as though the beans were re-forming in the portafilter.

if you search on google for 'rocky clumping', you will find several websites and forums where this is mentioned, and several frustrated owners attempting to modify the grinder to stop it from happening. Hopefully, Rancilio will address this in their next version.

The problem with clumping is that it gives a slightly uneven result after tamping, and does make an impact on the quality of the extraction.

  2. Easy To Use

I got this to go with a Silvia Machine. They work perfect together. I have mine set on 9 for espresso which seems pretty much bang on I get 1oz shots in about 25 seconds with a crema about about 4 mm thick. I'm a complete novice at this but I guess thats about right? Tastes great anyway so thats all that counts :-)

Great product, great service. See my more verbose review of the Silvia for more detail

  3. Rancilio Rocky

Posted by Simon Street on 22nd Dec 2010

Received my new Rocky today and I'm most impressed. My previous grinder was about £80 from a reputable brand but was always set to it's finest setting for an expresso shot and with a good hard tamp gave good crema and reasonable results or so I thought! Having now used the Rancilio what a difference. My first setting of about 5 gave such a fine grind water would not pass thru the portafilter! Then went to 15 and got a reasonable shot but what suprised me was the change in flavour and quality what an eye opener! With much more control over grind I'm now looking forward to experimenting.
