El Salvador Finca Santa Petrona Natural Red Bourbon

In the cup expect to say “oh hello!” There's a big tub of Turkish Delight with a wonderful cherry hit (do they make cherry Turkish Delight? If so it'd taste like this). It's a super clean cup that releases a flavour of soft synthetic strawberry as it cools. Massively delicious, and a coffee I think you'll thoroughly enjoy.

DETAILS

2014 marks our third year of working with Finca Santa Petrona after originally bringing back wonderful things from my trip to El Salvador in January of 2012. The aim of the trip was to discover exciting new coffees for Has Bean and I think it's safe to say I hit that nail right on the head! Ivisited again in 2013 and yet again this year. It's fantastic to be able to watch the farm grow and go back year after year, seeing the amazing work they're doing (and of course it's always great to be able to hang around on the farm spending time with lovely people)!

When I first visited Finca Santa Petrona, it wasn't a planned visit. I was spending a day with my friends Federico and Lily Bolanos who'd arranged to go for a picnic on Lily's father's farm in the Ilamatepeque mountains. The farm is situated in a part of the mountains I know well; for those of you who remember El Retiro from a few years ago … Lily's father's farm is right next door! They even share the same access road!

The farm was a new one to me and not one I had come across before. I spent the day getting more and more interested in the farm; seeing the facilities, meeting some of the pickers, and generally being very impressed at what great work they were doing. Lily and Federico had been helping her father and brother with some ideas of what the specialty market want and need from producers.

That same day I also got to go to the mill which is on the main road from Santa Ana City to San Salvador. Once again I saw organised, clean, and well run facilities, and the whole thing made for a super interesting free gift tour of a new farm.

So as the tour was coming to an end I secretly and very slyly asked Lily's brother (also called Federico - can you keep up?) for a sample and thought no more of it. When I got back to the UK I found a sample in my bag, and although I was super impressed with the setup, I remained sceptical that a farm could just appear like this to me without any planning and groundwork beforehand.

You can guess the rest from there. Sometimes things happen for a reason and I believe that my wandering onto Finca Santa Petrona back in 2012 was a mysteriously fantastic thing!

Located on the Ilamatepeque Volcano in the Western Part of the Santa Ana District in El Salvador, the farm was founded by the Pacas Diaz Family in 1927, and is now in its 6th generation. The farm is spread over 25.25 manzanas – which is 17.67 hectares of land - with varietals of Red Bourbon (80%), Pacas (15%), and Pacamara (5%). It's at an altitude of 1450 meters above sea level.

Two years ago in 2012 when we had our first year with this farm, they just had a washed Red Bourbon. I'm always excited to see what processing can do with a coffee so I asked super nicely if they'd be willing to do me a pulped natural and natural version. To my delight they said yes, and so last year in 2013 we expanded our range from Finca Santa Petrona to 3 coffees. This year in 2014 I'm so so so happy to have all 3 back!
