Stephen Hurst - Brazil Fazenda Inglaterra FEBRUARY 2013

This months grower of the month is not only English but my friend. After being a coffee importer for many years, Stephen saw the opportunity in 2006 to buy his own farm. Like most coffee people he had long held the dream of being able to grow coffee and own his own Fazenda, but unlike most coffee folks he followed through.

I have talked to Stephen much about owning the farm and he tells me what a money pit it really is. He is far from making money from it. But you can also see in his eyes how much fun he is having there. When he took me out to see it in 2009 you could see how proud of what he is achieving at the farm.

With a full time farm manager living on Inglaterra and with the help of Christiano and an agronomist the coffee keeps getting better and better.

Stephen grows coffee not for its yield or for its ease, but purely on taste, Canario being the most obvious varietal. Its the most expensive Brazil we buy and its still so small a lot that its impossible for Stephen to make money on. We have bought every single bean from this farm since it started producing, and we will continue to support it in the future. We are very happy to taste the fruits of Mr Hurst's folly
