This coffee is a naturally processed Biodynamic Geisha from El Equimite which is located in Coatepec in the Veracruz region of Mexico. Veracruz is a traditional coffee-producing centre for Mexico, but the owner of El Equimite, Gibrán Cervantes, has taken an anything-but-traditional approach.

Reimagining what coffee production can be, Gibrán has implemented Biodynamic processes in the farm, which produces not just coffee but a range of other crops. As well as the farm, Gibrán's work extends into supporting other producers in accessing 'speciality quality' buyers and in teaching more about agronomy and biodynamic practices. Please be aware that products grown using biodynamic agricultural techniques may not technically be suitable for vegans. For more information and to generally find out more about Biodynamic agriculture, please have a read of our deeper explanation here.

This coffee is Geisha variety, which although considered a rarity in Central America is surprisingly common in Mexico. We've talked about the journey of Geisha from Ethiopia to Costa Rica and Panama in the 1950s before, and from there it spread in the last 12 years throughout Central America - however, that's not how this Geisha got to Mexico. In fact, Geisha in Mexico came from Portugal and the coffee research that was happening there in the 1950's. Smallholders widely adopted the plants because of a reputation for resistance to coffee leaf rust and were not replaced with more modern varietals (for many reasons, including the historic lack of investment and support for small coffee producers in Mexico). This means that Mexican Geisha is a little different to the plants elsewhere in Central America and can be considered an "ecotype" - the same plant stock, but adapted to the Mexican environment.

With crisp fresh lime alongside raspberry and a little shoulder of funk, this is a fruity and zingy coffee finishes with soft blueberry for a big, bold and complex cup.
